Exhaust Aftertreatment Monitoring & Control Systems Download the entire
Exhaust Aftertreatment whitepaper here: Introduction Hewitt Industries has produced a number of monitoring and control systems supporting Exhaust After Treatment systems in diesel and natural gas vehicles. These electronic sub-systems provide monitoring of excessive temperature and/or pressure conditions in the exhaust system. These conditions are often the first indication of a degraded exhaust system, or can be the result of catastrophic failure of an engine component. Initially the product line primarily provided monitoring capabilities that were used to determine the setpoints required for detection of exhaust system problems. Next, output capabilities were added to provide engine shutdown capabilities via existing ECM inputs. The first module offered with monitoring and control was the 030-015 Catalytic Converter. The module provided detection of rising exhaust gas temperature, to eliminate progressive damage to the engine and engine compartment. Module outputs are provided to trigger engine shutdown or throttle reduction via ECM inputs. Back pressure monitoring with latched display was also provided. The next major step in exhaust system monitoring and control comes from the 030-018 series of Throttle Controls. The 030-018-04 provides back pressure monitoring, with throttle reduction. The 030-018-05 provides monitoring only of back pressure. The 030-018-03 provides temperature monitoring, with throttle reduction. The most recent development efforts have produced the 030-200 series modules, with significant improvements in packaging and sensing. The pressure switches have been replaced with an internal pressure transducer. The pressure transducer in the module can be connected to the exhaust system via a hose kit, and replaces the electro-mechanical pressure switches. The module package has been tailored for dashboard or engine compartment mounting, and is quite compact. This new product line permits combinations of pressure and temperature sensing, control, data logging and display capabilities that can be implemented in a modular fashion. Significant cost savings will be realized with the simplified installation of this product series. |
